Following a question asked in the "Discuss" area about whether it was possible to sequence letters for spelling tasks, I had a go at creating a "proof of concept" for that very idea. It worked very easily actually. I chose the placing activity, and selected 16 options at the bottom of the screen. (This would ensure that the word to be spelt correctly would have many different letter options within it.
Once this was done, I created a box across the screen and divided it into 8 boxes, making them the same size as the boxes at the bottom of the screen.
Next, I chose the word (in this case "elephant" as it had 8 letters to test the idea with), and placed all the letters within the word into the boxes - along with several wrong letters.
Following this, I wrote the text on the main screen - giving a clue as to what the word could be, and also drawing a wastebin for the wrong letters to be put into. (of course this could be created in a separate art program and the whole background added to the screen).
Each correct letter was then clicked on, and the placement box was moved to make sure it corresponded to the correct place within the answer box. All "wrong" letters were edited so that they could be put into the wastebin.
I only created the one spelling - but up to ten can be created and linked together using the "levels" template - making a 10 word spelling test to complete.
You can make the spellings harder by changing some of the values at the start of the task (right click on the green triangle to access these settings).
Alter the "_root.snapBackIfWrong" value to false to stop wrong letters being returned to the tray below the activity.
Alter the "_root.centreIfCorrect" value to true if you want the letters to line up neatly in the finished word
